Children’s Cupcake Class: Ages 10 to 16

This class is a specially designed Cupcake Decorating Class for children between the ages of 10 and 16.  It is a unique  class so will only take place twice (in half term)! So, if you have a budding young baker living with you who wants to learn how to decorate like the professionals and you want a few hours to yourself during half term, don’t miss out on a chance of a place!

When are the classes?

There will be two classes on 15 February 2012:

(i) from 9.30 to 12.30 and

(ii) from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.

You can book either the morning session or the afternoon session for your child.  All bookings must be made by someone over the age of 18.

The aim of the class is to teach budding bakers some new skills which they can then practice at home.  By the end of the class, they will be able to decorate perfect little cupcakes.  Children do not need to have any prior experience but should have some interest in baking, cakes or learning a new skill.

Equipment

Everyone in the class will be provided with a full set of equipment so your child will not need to bring anything with them except an apron.  We will also provide drinks for refreshment.

Class Times

The morning class starts promptly at 9.30am and will finish at 12.30pm.  The afternoon class starts at 2.30 pm and will finish at 5.30pm. Everything will be explained step by step to the children attending with plenty of opportunity to ask lots of questions about everything to do with cupcakes.

What the Children Will Learn

The main aim of this class is to have lots of fun whilst learning something new.  Baking is a really sociable thing to do so and great fun at the same time. Children will all decorate 6 cupcakes each and will learn the following skills:

  1. How to pipe butter cream roses using a rose nozzle to create two toned piping;
  2. How to pipe edible “grass” using a grass nozzle;
  3. How to use other piping nozzles for different effects and how to pipe properly using one hand;
  4. How to make a little edible pond with toadstalls and little edible snails, birds etc;
  5. How to use sugar paste properly when making cakes;
  6. How to use moulds to make everything from ballet shoes, flip flops, and buttons to football shirts and welly boots to top cupcakes;
  7. How to make a giant bow to sit on top of a cupcake;
  8. How to emboss sugar paste to give a textured effect to cupcakes;
  9. How to make edible flowers to adorn cupcakes;
  10. How to make little novelty caterpillars and an explanation of what “animates” novelty characters on cupcakes.

We have lots and lots cutters, moulds, colours and lots more tools available to experiment with and Suzi, the owner of Pretty Witty Cakes, will be on hand at all times to answer questions, demonstrate and help the children throughout so they all learn as much as possible.

Competition!

For the last part of the class, there will be a mini competition and each child will be able to put into practice the skills he or she has learnt during the class to create a cupcake of their own choice.  At the end of the class, a winner will be chosen who will receive a special Pretty Witty Cakes prize.

Certificates

All children will receive a certificate after attending the class.

Parents

As this is a class for children aged 10 to 16, parents are not expected to stay with them although parents are expected to remain in the local area and be contactable by mobile.

Crowborough is famous for the Ashdown Forest and Pretty Witty HQ is right on the doorstep of this forest.  Therefore, parents may like to take a walk in the forest, visit the local towns, cafes or other areas of interest (including Tunbridge Wells which has great shopping for mums and dads who like to shop!).  Upon booking a place, all parents will receive a suggested list of places to visit while their child is at the class.
