Retro/Vintage Cupcakes: Stencilling & Piping Class

Our Retro/Vintage Stencilling and Royal Piping class is all about style and elegance. This class is for beginners and intermediates who want to learn new skills to increase their cupcake repertoire.  The focus of the class is making cupcakes that are graceful, light and full of summer nostalgia.

Class Times and Equipment

This class starts promptly at 10.15am and runs to 4.30pm.  We supply everything you need to make perfect retro or vintage cupcakes so you do not need to bring anything with you.

What you will learn

This class is where we focus on all things elegant and dainty.   We will teach you about colour palettes and designs that are appropriate to this style of cupcake – whether your interest is in creating in-vogue vintage pastel cupcakes or a more flamboyant take on retro styles.

This focus of this class is decorating so we do not teach you how to make the cupcakes from scratch (see our Cupcake Basics class if you are a complete beginner and want to cover baking).

Learning about retro colour palettes and dainty patterns

We will discuss principles of colour theory and design both relevant to today and to by-gone eras.  We willl show you designs, patterns and flowers that are dainty, pretty and perfect with this style of cupcake.  With this knowledge you will be able to transform the mood and style of your finished cupcakes.

Learning to work with stencils

We will teach you how to work with stencils using 3 techniques which all result in very different effects.  You will try out all techniques for yourself including how to use stencils to make relief patterns, how to “paint” pictures with stencils and how to make shimmering stencil designs.  You will be surprised by how many different ways there are to use stencils to decorate your cupcakes.

Learning to work with Royal Icing and Piping

You will also learn how to pipe using a writing nozzle so you can create delicate and intricate piping work.  If you have never used royal icing before, this is the class for you as you will master this distinct style of piping during the day so you feel confident using it on future cupcake designs – a bonus when it is currently in huge demand for wedding and party cupcakes.

Learning to make perfect fondant tops to your cupcakes

We will teach you how to make perfect circular tops to your cupcakes in fondant (sugar paste) to ensure that the tops are not too small or too big – but just perfect.

All the decorations will be made from sugar paste, flower paste, edible dusts or royal icing.  As with our other classes, we never include anything in our cupcakes that is inedible so your decorations will be both edible and stunning! All of our ingredients are vegetarian and where possible, fair trade.

Once you have finished decorating all your cakes, you will be provided with a presentation box to transport your perfect and fresh cupcakes home with you.

Take Home Fact Pack

You will be given a fact sheet describing all the techniques you learnt during the day so you can refresh your mind next time you bake as there is a lot to teach you.  Of course, there are also lots of tips on our Facebook discussions page .

We supply lots of tea and coffee throughout the day and you can take breaks whenever you wish. We have a lovely coffee area attached to the kitchen where everyone can relax and chat during lunch.

You can ask as many questions as you want throughout the day, ask about tips, secrets and short cuts whilst having a thoroughly fun time.   This class is the cupcake equivalent of a relaxing massage and you will find yourself truly amazed with the new skills you will learn in just one day.
